Sharing the Knowledge part 18

I'm still around. I've been having internet issues. I trying to decide on switching or just sticking to using my phone as I am doing now.
I thought things were going well, but a small glitch, if you can call it that, has popped up.
I thought everything was cool with my taxes, but it seems both I and the IRS, messed up.
Then I was trying to see what the procedure would be regarding the house in NOLA. I thought if the taxes weren't paid the city would take the. house, but it doesn't happen that quick.
Now I have to come up with a new plan to not have to deal with the city as far as the house being listed as blighted property.
That means trying to find someone to cut down the weeds and see if I can either find a buyer or raise the funds myself.

I Am An Artist

(Playing around with back drops like in the old days.)

It starts with an idea... The a blank piece of paper or canvas. One of the first things we learn is how to be creative even without knowing. It's to keep us occupied, but learnign in the process. We are given colorful images to play with. Something to stimulate the brain, such as building blocks. We doodle before we can spell. What people call chicken scratch looks like masterpeices to the little brain. We are so proud of what we created and we want to show it to those that matter. It'a the idea of completing something and getting validation.

As a child, when I was asked what I wanted to be when I grew up, everything came to mind, but being an artist. I guess it just didn't register as a job. I guess I could say I've been dabbling in art all of my life. I didn't start getting paid until I was in high school. Part of that is because, outside of my family, very few people knew I could draw. I never took an art class until my senior year of high school and that was just to pick up extra credit. I also liked the teacher.

Most of my family has always supported my endeavors. I was always coming up with ways to make money. I remember when I got my 8mm movie projector, I would charge the kids in the neighborhood twenty five cents to watch classic silent movies. As I got older I wanted to make movies, but other things would pop up that didn't require as much time to complete. I've always been a bit of a perfectionist; to make a good movie one has to have time.

In 2001 I declared myself an artist, when I found out my job as a buyer was co
ming to an end. I decided I would no longer be a part of corporate America. I would do my own thing and just enjoy life. I had put myself in a position where I could do just that.
(Creating effects without using a photo program)

There are always things we don't anticipate. We can deal with it or just throw in the towel. I've never been known as a quitter. If I start something I want to finish it. I had lots of time to work on my art. Photography, writing and poetry shared my creative side. My visual ability allowed me to write some personal poetry that is truly some of my best. The last time I had written poetry steadily was in 1999 when I was a part of the New Orleans Poetry Forum. I was asked to join the group and accepted so I could see if I was as good as people said I was. It put me on a path to begin performing again. I began reading poetry at various venues around town that catered to that scene. Dragon's Den, The Blue Nile and The Maple Leaf bar.

Being able to blog online has allowed me the opportunity to share my words, my art and photography with others. If I inspire one person then I'm doing what I set out to do. The creative process for each artist is different. I realize arrtists have a common thread and a responsibility to make people think. Some artist only focus on one specific area. They create music, design buildings, clothing, costumes or sets. Some write, sketch or paint. For those like myself who work in many art forms, you go back and forth. When I get tired of one or get blocked, I move on to something else until I can come back to a project.

There are times when you may get frustrated and just walk away from it, but a true artist always has those ideas circling around inside of their head. It doesn't matter how you create, or when you create. The important thing is that you do it and don't give up.

Remembering August 29, 2005

The Crescent City Connection in New Orleans.

On the 6th anniversary of Katrina, I remember that I was wondering if my photos and art were going to be safe when I would return home. Once I was evacuated from my home I didn’t know if the water would get any higher.

The mind plays tricks on you. The images on the television kept showing water coming into the city. It was actually showing what had already happened.

I realized when I decided to return to the house that I was only concerned about my photographs and my laptop. I was able to supply family members with memories they had lost due to the hurricane. I’m still supplying photographs and memories.

Taking it one day at a time and keeping the faith.

Check back and see where this journey leads.

Remembering The Summer Solstice 2011

Images from a Summer Solstice - The way this came about is very interesting. In fact most of my memorial photographs have incredible stories behind them. It all started with the recreation of the crucifix at Woodlawn Cemetery ( I think that’s the right name) in Seattle. It started with a party, the discovery of someone who had the same idea and a photograph of a cross that I had no idea was so huge. The photo shoot was very spiritual. In fact, the entire week was incredible. The photos are something I am really proud of. For some it was a little controversial, but I didn’t see it that way at all. The art that came out of it and the story behind it is special for me. Of course if people knew the story they would have a better understanding of the photos, but that’s my secret.

I happen to be in NOLA for the Summer Solstice. I had forgotten about it. There was someone visiting the city that I would be meeting for the first time and I offered to give them some insight on the city since this was their first visit.

I decided to go up to Audubon park because I had not been there in a while. I think it was about two years ago, but I stayed in the front part taking pictures. This time I decided to go along the river. We walked down and then stopped at one of the gazebo like structures. The weather was incredible. There was a heavy breeze. I had to hold the bill of my cap so it wouldn’t fly away. There were some sprinkles from the rain. After about 30 minutes of talking, some people showed up and asked if they could set up under the gazebo. It was public domain and I didn’t have a problem with that.

I thought it was interesting that they invited us to join in their celebration. They had wine, tea and beer. They grilled, played music and were very social able. I was very observant as I usually am. A few of them had cameras and I decided to take a few pictures myself. Some of the images you see here are a result of such a surreal and tranquil evening. I hope they don’t mind that I’m using the images here.

Last Entry for 2010

Can I take a trip? I had been going back and forth with this for quite some time. I wanted so much to actually get away to clear my head. Work on some art and immerse myself in my creative process. Every now and then it is good to have a change of scenery and to be with different people.

I’ve been wanting to go back to the Big Island to create some art and to spend time with a friend and pick up my belongings. I know when the time is right it will come together. I had opportunities to go other places, but I just didn’t feel it at that time. I believe in going with the vibe in just about everything that I do.

As this is the last day of the new year this is the last entry of 2010. For most of us it was a scary year. We didn’t know if we were going to have a job, funds to pay bills or even stay in our homes.

2010 was filled with happiness and sadness for some of us. I tried to get my own talk show and even be a part of Good Morning America, but it wasn’t meant to be. We had the opportunities to be with family and friends. We tried on new hats and took time to reflect on what life offered us. No matter what happened, we are still hear and we can make a change in the new year. Exercise, get healthy, quit smoking, etc.

I’m doing laundry and getting the house in order. You want to start off the new year with clean clothes and a clean house. Of course I’ve always spent the new year by myself which means I end the new year by myself. It just depends on how you look at it and it is after all my choice.

The new year will bring lots of new opportunities and I will begin a new journey. I hope to bring out even more of my creative flow and that I can share it with a larger group of people. You can find out more by checking back to see how this journey unfolds. I want to thank all of you who came back on a regular basis. Those that became followers and maybe I helped to create a conversation between you and your friends.

Have a safe evening, and I lift my glass in a toast to wish you all a happy new year.

Stimulate Art

I have three dollars left on my Borders gift card. I was going to go to the movies and then head over to Borders, but I got delayed. I like going to the first showing of a movie for several reasons. Usually there aren’t a lot of people in the theater so its like watching a movie at home. Usually the first showing is a discounted showing so you don’t have to pay full price, just in case the film is a bomb. Rarely do I go to see a film that I don’t come away from enjoying some part of it.

I’ve been reading and looking at a lot of books and magazines to get inspiration for the various forms of art that I create. Video, photography and scrap booking are now taking top priority and I’m trying to incorporate them all into one project.

The digital art form is unique, but what I don’t like about it is that it really isn’t the same as creating with your hands. When I took pictures with my 35mm camera, I took my time because film costs and I didn’t want to take a lot of unnecessary shots. I got to know my subjects quite well and knew what worked. With digital, you can just shoot forever and if you don’t like something you can manipulate it on the computer or just hit delete. Colors can be enhanced so much that the image is unreal. You can also drop an image in a place where it never existed. Of course its still an art form, but it would be great if photographers shared their secrets and stop making people believe it’s the original shot. Last year I was reading one of my artists magazines and there were some techniques in a previous issue that blew me away. I was dumbfounded because I couldn’t recreate the images. A few weeks ago I was reading the last issue and found out the secret to creating those images was not all original. What the artist had done was created a drawing and scanned it into the computer and then printed it out. The artist then colored on top of the image which created some intense imagery and colors. I tried it and guess what, it worked. It pisses me off, that they could have told me that to begin with and then I wouldn’t feel like I was missing out on something. I don’t have a problem sharing my techniques with others. There are many easy ways to create something even if you get a little help in the beginning. I create my own master drawings which allow me to use the same characters over and over as I see fit. I also make my own stencils. As an artist, one is only limited by ones imagination.

Check out the above links if you haven’t already. Watch for new links.

Time to get back to reality. Rebuilding my life, one step at a time.
